The film depicts the life of one-time wealthy and noble poet Mirza Ghalib. The story revolves around his trials, successes and failures and his ultimate descent into poverty. Ghalib falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Chaudvin; however, tragedy befalls their ill-fated relationship.Set in a historical background,the film deals with the eternal psychological and social problems in the career of a genious poet.This film portrays one aspect of life of Mirza Ghalib (Born:Dec.27,1797 Died:Feb.15,1869 at age 73)in which the conflict between love and loyalty had deeply affected a sensitive artist.Mirza Ghalib fails to make an impression at the Royal Court 'Mushaira' of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar but at the same time,unknowingly wins the heart of Chaudvin ,an accomplished court dancer.

It stars Bharat Bhushan as Ghalib and Suraiya as his courtesan lover. The film won the Golden Lotus Award for National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1955.
