Deepti Naval

Biography

Deepti Naval is an Indian actor, writer, painter, photographer, director, born in Amritsar, Punjab India. After her four decades of career in Films, she is presently engaged in the contemporary theatre performances. Her major contribution has been in the area of art cinema, winning critical acclaim for her sensitive and 'close to life' characters that emphasized the changing roles of women in India. She has acted in over 90 Hindi films.

Deepti Naval made her debut in 1981 for which she won her first best actress award in the film 'Ek Baar Phir'. She has since appeared in more than 90 films, including 'Chashme Baddoor'(1981 film), 'Mirch Masala' (1985), and Leela (2002) and 'Freaky Chakra (film 2003). She also wrote and directed 'Thodasa Aasmaan' a Television serial about women's lives. Deepti produced a travel show 'The Path Less Travelled' apart from her selection of poems called 'Lamha Lamha' which was published in the year 1981. Her second book of poems 'Black Wind and Other Poems' was published in 2004 and in 2011, she published her first anthology of short fiction, called 'The Mad Tibetan: Stories from Then and Now'. She also won the Best Screenplay at the New York Indian Film Festival for her direction of the film,'Do Paise Ki Dhoop Chaar Aane ki Baarish'.
